The equine 4H rider Is looking so aloof. Her horse is all spit-polished From her mane down to her hoof. She's next for the arena, Her predecessor's doing fine. Her mount is standing quietly As they wait their turn in line. Watching the judge so closely, For the maneuvers he will ask. And wondering if she and her horse Are equal to the task. They've done these drills perfectly At home time after time. Her mare is quick and nimble, She can turn right on a dime. She's hoping that the horse won't shy From the carnival noise horrendous, And wishing that her turn would come, The pressure is tremendous. At last the gate is opened. She holds her head up high, Smiles as she's been told to do Looks the judge right in the eye. Her mare's responding steadily And comes to a perfect halt. She knows if they should fail this class, It won't be the horses fault. The horse and rider are like one A touch is all she'll need To give her mount directions and This wonderful horse will heed. At last the judge dismisses them And does it with a smile. The rider knows she and her horse Have conducted themselves with style. She's friends with the other riders And knows they will be trying too, To have such a great performance That they will win the blue. The competition's over, Most of the riders pass. They applaud for her with fervor When her horse wins "Best of Class." She gives her horse another hug, As she rides back into line. Patting her steed, she whispers, "This prize is yours not mine." Now she is free to see the sights, Of the exciting county fair. Before she leaves she stables her, And takes care of her mare. She'll never have a better friend Than this beautiful, gentle horse. The two of them will go to state And win again, of course. By Joyce 06/01/01 |

Joyce: This brought back fond memories of watching young girls we have in our neighborhood, at the county fair. It's always exciting when one of them wins. Betty Lou Hebert |
