From the Plane

Up in the air and looking down,
I see a quilt of green and brown,
Where farmer's fields spread far and wide
Across the rolling countryside.

It looks so pretty from the plane.
No glimpse of all the personal pain,
In plowing, planting, watching too,
To see if harvest dreams come true.

No hint of drought, disease and blight.
Locusts, break downs, parasite,
But there behind each patch of green
Are many hardships, just unseen.

Not all of us who fly on by,
Above these fields where great hopes lie,
Can be aware of labor's cost,
Or what's involved when crops are lost.

So as the shadow of the plane
Sweeps across the fields of grain,
We often see here in the west,
I wish them all the very best!

This is lovely Betty and so true.  The old saying you can't judge a book by its cover certainly applies here.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Having lived on a farm at one time, I can't look at fields even from a plane, without seeing some of the labor involved.

Things are often not what they seem to be to the casual observer. This is insightful and well conceived. Bravo.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

I appreciate the thoughts here, Betty Lou...
our Canadian prairie farmers are currently suffering from droughts and grasshopper attacks...
well written!

pegasus111:  Thanks.  Having spent some years on a farm in Canada, I came to appreciate the labor that goes into growing any kind of crop.  That;s what I always think of when looking down from a plane!

Lary:  Thanks for your comments.  I grew up in Alberta, both north and south and remember what goes into farming.  I have relatives there who have been telling me about the terrible drought conditions.  So sorry to hear it!

I haven't done much flying for the last couple of years and I miss it too.  I love looking at the land we fly over and the clouds.

Dear Betty Lou

A great poem!  Yes, we are not there to see the hardships that the farmers face.  We only see the end result!

Patricia:

I'm so glad you liked this!  I am about to go flying again and it will be interesting to see how the country has changed, from the last time I flew over that section.

Dear Betty,

this poem really came from the heart! and it touched mine

Not all of us who fly on by,
Above these fields where great hopes lie,
Can be aware of labor's cost,
Or what's involved when crops are lost.
