Baby Brother

The whole family had been sworn
To a strict pact of secrecy,
Keeping all news of your coming
From little sister and from me.

Mother quietly determined
Her precious secret she would keep.
When she sewed your baby layette,
We were in school or fast asleep.

Imagine our astonishment,
What a wonderful, grand surprise,
When our darling baby brother
Appeared before our love-struck eyes.

We quickly claimed you as our own,
Our loved doll, our favorite pet.
These proprietary feelings,
We haven't quite relinquished yet.
