Shards of shattered slivered glass, Brownish stains on matted grass, Eerie calm upon the lawn, Where have all our children gone? Eight years old by just a day, Brand new pup with which to play, Four "bangers" in an Oldsmobile, Casting lots, who gets to kill. Twenty gauge, a stolen gun, Play in the yard, no where to run, Explosion rips the neighborhood, Rends the flesh, Mom, I'll be good. Fourteen pellets made of steel, No tears to cry, too numb to feel, Where's young pup, he's run away, Tomorrow's just another day. Cops patrolling down the street, One more day in Kansas heat, Eric Clapton sings the blues, Headlines on the evening news. Football games don't need no prayer, Mother sits on worn out chair, Come on in, it's time for bed, At the morgue, a boy lays dead. Young pup whimpers in the night, All alone, no boy in sight, Sniffs around brown matted lawn, Where have all our children gone? [This message has been edited by Mike (edited 06-22-2000).] |

This is a sad, but true statement of the shape our world is in today. This piece brought tears to my eyes. Excellent writing and a very important topic. Great Job!! --You can either take me as I am...or you can watch me as I go.-- |

Oh Mike, this poem makes my heart bleed...and I wonder how I can go back and appreciate the first of summer. You write this bitter sad story perfectly....and it's not just Kansas that kills innocence. |

Very sad, Mike. So sad that our world has come to this, where innocent children become victims of the cruelty and stupidity of others. Very very sad. Denise |

Thank you for your replies. Some events are so tragic and senseless, you have to wonder sometimes. |

Oh, so sad but good poem. Life can be so cruel sometimes. *sigh* Geir -- "Luck affects everything. Let your hook always be cast; in the stream where you least expect it there will be a fish." Ovid (BC 43-18 AD) |

Incredible expression Mike ... I can't even begin to describe the emotions it brought out in me. Excellent words, flow, sentiments and most importantly, message. Really well written! Best wishes, /Kit |

Your statement, though tragic, is clear with this piece...sad and angering. ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

I don't know if I can see through my tears to type, but you have showcased reality too well here. [This message has been edited by Lost Dreamer (edited 06-23-2000).] |

It's a pity that this poem has to have such a strong ring of truth to it, but I thought it was excellent, very well written. Linda M. |
