An Amazing Story

Amazing how a spirit lives, in hope and in true
Grace and
How hard the times can be for some but
Sweet for others who know
The truth.  When the soul can hear a
Sound so pure
That lives through its own Lord, who has
Saved not one life but more. And mine is
A life that could be called a
Wretch, for what I do
Like thousands that have gone before. But
Me, O Lord
I have learned that
Once a man who has lived so wrong,
Was sore at heart and
Lost in kind,
But as never before,
Now he could not live.  "I
Am grieved of this journey, the darkies I
Found to be human and wronged, I
Was evil and turned a
Blind eye to the injustice,
But through Your grace
Now no longer will I ship slaves as
I forthwith in the true light do
See.

John Newton [1725-1807] lived as a religious and prosperous man who as a blackbirder made his fortune in slave-trading. Because of his religion, he knew the trade of man was wrong. Soon after one trip, he was struck not only by the Africans' soulful chanting, but a revelation in the wrong-doing of humankind, and thus, "Amazing Grace" was conceived. If you did not realize what you were reading, I entreat you to go back and read only the first word of each line downward.

Thank you for coming in.

This was so beautiful!!  Superb writing!!  That is I think the most beautiful song I have ever heard.  Thank you so much for the history and poem.  It was a pleasure to read.

Sunshine,
this is absolutely amazing. . . (pardon my choice of words. . . )

As I was reading, I did notice the hymn in the first words of every line. . .

Excellent. . .

hey Sunny,
what an Amazing post!
Is the poem real as written by John Newton?
Did he actually devise the words to impart
the message of his god given song with more
impact?  Whether by Newton or your friend
Karilea, i guess doesn't really matter...
the true message would be in the Blood, eh?
Appreciate the link!
this was well worth the look, thank you!
