The Unopened Book

From opaque days forgotten
To the clear of cherished times
From the voices well remembered
To the tunes lost in the mind

All emotions ever weathered
All the laughter still contained
Are witnessed in the looking glass
Of life that still remains

We open up the book of tales,
Reflections in the glass,
Hoping that our young will learn to live
From lessons we’ve amassed

For we rode the horse of courage
And we fought survival’s game
And our love begot devotion
And we lived in honor’s name

We sipped from out the pool of truth
We plucked from wisdom’s stem
And we think that this inheritance
Will be passed on to them

But there lives will not be our lives
They will man their own canoe
Through the rapids in the canyons
Of a place we never knew

Our lives will be forgotten
Like those vague opaque days
But the cream of suckled morals
Are absorbed along the way

It will not be from our stories
That our children learn to live
But from a book unopened
That our heritage we give

The beliefs that we adhere to
That from deeds are well implied
Are the jewels that stay forever
Etched within our children’s eyes

Yes! Elizabeth! you've done a superb job. I love the qualities of teaching you employ here.

"But the cream of suckled morals
are absorbed along the way."

"But from a book unopened
that our heritage we give.

"The beliefs that we adhere to
that from deeds are well implied
are the jewells that stay forever
etched within our children's eyes."

So true there's nothing like setting the proper example to really impress "the cream of suckled morals," upon the mind of an impressionable child.

The little boy walks and acts like the father
The little girl acts like the mother.. But both have a personality and mind of their own..It's only natural that they are going to be influenced by their parents in spiritual moral ways also.

Great job!... I admire this piece.

part of your children's heritage will be the very words you've uttered, and written...
