It was there first one
brand new
thirty year old house
they walked into
the front door
and look around
There was nothing on the floor
nothing on the walls
She said honey you can do something
for me after all
chorus:
I need some shelves in the kitchen
I need some shelves in the hall
I need some shelves in the front room
He said I don't mind at all

He reached out his fingers
and gently touched her cheek
can't it wait til morning
You're makin my knees week

They had their children
and then when
time just flew on by
Their own children
had children
and they all wondered why

Grandma and grandpa lived so far away
and always in a hurry,
have to go straight home she'd say

CHORUS

They went to parties
and picnics
and all the grandkids came
but they always
left early
the reason never changed

Grandpa's been promising me
over twenty years
to help me fix up that old house
I need shelves from there to here

As a child I imagined in amazement
of a house filled with shelves
from the attic to the basement

When they both
decided
it was time to go
I walked in through
that front door
and wouldn't you know....

.
.
.
.
there were books on the floor
and there was nothing on the walls
not a nail, not a board
there was no shelf in the hall

As I turned to leave
I saw his last note by the phone
it said
"Honey, if you're real good,
we'll put up shelves when I get home"

The End
