near her bed he sat and watched waiting for the inevitable to come helpless hopeless dear God how would he go on with her gone? (closing his eyes) he leaned back hands still holding hers as she slept a peaceful sleep and he dreamed of days in the summer sun children's voices sand between his toes and her lovely voice falling on his ears like music telling him of her hopes and dreams and wishes and fears the sun shining down on her creamy skin ripples of light flowing through her copper hair laughter smiles life (oh God, take me not her!) as she slept on and on her breathing so peaceful and even while his heart was breaking his life shattering around him in that sterile hospital ward waiting for death waiting for God quietly now he rested again this time his head nestled to her side and he slept too the sleep of the damned silently now, in sweet repose she slipped away to heaven a gentle smile on her face the knowledge of his undying love etched across her heart love enough to last a lifetime and far into eternity author's note........ This poem was inspired by a local couple who had fallen in love 76 years ago in Idaho, they broke up and lost track of each other, last year when the old gentleman heard that his old flame's husband had died, he contacted her. They ended up married, at 95 & 96 yrs of age. Well last night they got in a head on collision and are in a local hospital, the old guy wouldn't let the staff work on him until his wife was stabilized. I found this at once, heart-wrenching and utterly romantic. < !signature--> "Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything." --William Shakespeare [This message has been edited by X Angel (edited 07-22-2000).] |

This is very special X Angel I thank you for sharing. It's sad when things happen this way. Beautiful the way you put it together. Shows the bonding power of love down to the very end. |
