Hear my story
from a far off land,
'bout a merchant
with a sweet fruit stand.

Elegant
was his display,
polished
carefully each day,
a mountain
beckoning,
"Come taste..."
exacting count,
of monies paid.

He grew rich
and he grew fat,
as all about him,
children sat.
Tummies swollen,
with their need,
deaf ear turned
to cries of grief.

"Bring your wallet,"
scorned the man,
"Away!" he shoo-ed
them from his stand.
As he turned
away from need,
he spied thin hand
of desperate thief.

He pounced upon
the startled child,
indignant
of his wares defiled.
"May sword of justice,
have your ear!"
Off they went,
to see Vizier.

Vizier was old,
and he was wise,
he had fished
in many tides.
He listened calmly
merchant's rant,
as child wept
in tears' recant.

Finally merchant
ended plea,
smugly smiled
in victory.
Vizier had listened
carefully,
and calmly issued
this decree:

"For this crime,
so heinous--Bold,
may your soul
have eyes behold."
And to the merchant,
come undone,
"Hug this child.
He's now your son.
You shall buy him
finest robes,
and every pleasure
that is sold."

The merchant swooned
in disbelief,
Vizier then jumped
up to his feet.
"I grant you mercy.
Can you not see?
Exchange of gold,
for eternal peace?
For with your heart
so filled with greed,
from innocence,
created Thief."
