I am a solid citizen. I always try to do what's right. Should an enemy attack us, I'd volunteer to fight. When people whom I've helped elect Become larcenous or crazy, Not to work to turn them out Would be proof that I was lazy. My antennae are extended To detect any social wrong. Any good cause I'll support. Just ask--I'll go along. I've signed hundreds of petitions, I've circulated hundreds more. I've stuffed a million envelopes. I've trudged from door to door. I've pasted bumper stickers On every car I've driven. When the appeal came in the mail, Invariably I've given. There have always been good causes. No doubt there'll always be. But lately I've been wondering What they have to do with me. Notwithstanding all my efforts, Problems just proliferate, While the years that make me older, Well, you know, they never wait. So after some soul-searching And reflecting just a bit, I've arrived at a decision, And, dear reader, this is it: Henceforth this solid citizen Will put all causes on the shelf Except for only one good cause The most deserving cause--himself!
