Red, White and Blue Thirteen colonies were sewn into stripes of red and white Settlers from Europe looking for religious rights White stars upon a field of blue now fifty states in all Governed by a constitution made into our law Red, white and blue waves high and proud on Independence day If it could speak perhaps the flag would have these words to say Red is for the blood that flowed for independence sought White was purity of a nation where civil rights were taught Blue is for the endless skyline marking new frontiers Red white and blue, a flag was somehow born within those years Red is for the blood that stained the fields at Gettysburg White was on the face of those with Lee at Petersburg White was the surrender flag the Southern forces flew With Grant and Union officers in uniforms of blue Red white and blue waves high and proud on Independence day If it could speak perhaps the flag would have these words to say Red is for the courage of the Cherokee, and Sioux Many were forced from native lands to a Trail of Tears in blue Red was blood shed by the slaves who worked plantation land White were men disguised in sheets with torches in their hand Red was blood shed by the allies at Marne and then Verdun White was a treaty at Versailles declaring war was won Red was the beach of Normandy, white was the giant bomb Blue were the loved ones who lost sons to guns of Viet Cong Red white and blue waves high and proud on Independence day If it could speak perhaps the flag would have these words to say Blue are all the tears we’ve wept, white is honor earned Red was the fire, hot and angry, when the flag was burned Red, white and blue is for a country which is free to live Free to speak, to work, to create, to love, to earn, to give Red, white and blue were colonies who left the mother land And now are 50 states so truly blessed with something grand Immigrants are coming here from all around the world And all pay honor to a flag: red, white, and blue unfurled Red, white and blue waves high and proud on Independence Day The stars and stripes wave in the hearts of Americans today Elizabeth Scheffey |

I'm not the most patriotic person in the world, but this really got me in the spirit for the 4th! A beautiful tribute to our country, my friend. < !signature--> "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde "The robbed that smiles steals something from the thief" -Shakespea [This message has been edited by LoveBug (edited 07-03-2000).] |

Elizabeth, dear friend~ You've covered so many of the reasons that we acknowledge and honor of the flag of our country. Thank you for this thoughtful render. It's extremely well-done. Love you and hope you have a wonderful Fourth Of July celebration of the heart. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |
