Hanalei Sun Each morning breaks as the one before, A sinking sensation of something amiss, palms all wrong against brownish hills echoes an awareness, a longing. Softness absent in the mainland dawn, A simple mistake in leaving home, She was searching for something more, found instead she lost herself. Caught in the daily crush of cars, Cascading rivers and tributaries Dumping into concrete oceans Obscured by coffee colored skies, The horizon becomes a mirage of emerald valleys, fusion of color, A lei of pale scented pikake Adorning the neck of Hanalei Sun. Her gentle Hawaiian spirit has no place In L.A.’s shimmering illusions The tempo too turbulent For one who sings slow strains. Fear of losing face in homecoming, But her people understand this desire Better than they could leaving this place And welcome her with comforting customs. Trade winds blow, it’s the rainy season, A woman runs along deserted shores, Greeting self in an array of flora, Finding the long lost Hanalei Sun. © 2000 Corinne Bailey |

What a sweet, sad and melancholy piece of writing this is, Corrine. I symphasize with anyone who is out of their surroundings and off-balance in an unfamiliar place. Been there...done that |

Corrine, beautiful poem as always. wonderful imagery. A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry |

Thank you, Balladeer, Janet Marie, Marge, Park, Brian, and Kit. Met a lady while on vacation in southern california named Hanalei Sun, she is now in her 70's, but was born in Maui. It struck me that she was so out of place here and I wondered if it was now too late to return home, but perhaps it's just a fanciful imagination, she might have been quite happy living here most of her life...
