-soul's spoken verse- freestyle My soul is a stone I keep beneath my tongue. When I laugh it tastes like the sky. When I cry it burns like the sun. Sometimes I roll it in my mouth, Pressed against my teeth. Sometimes I try to bite it Before I bring it back beneath. And it wells in small pinpoint drops of copper blood. And it has a little voice -- it whispers. Tells me in song how to be strong, Or how to fall and hang without grace. Sometimes the stone fits in my hand And I squeeze my soul in my fist. Sometimes I juggle it with common rocks And it's immediately missed. It is so round, so small, so hard, Such a tiny little crumb rounded and smooth And ready to prove what I don't even know I have inside. It's almost the color of a dusky heart. Like a cherry with its stem plucked, Its seeds sucked, Its juice removed. It almost feels oily -- But when I roll it in my fingers There's nothing; no residue. Is it the eye of an insect, One small piece of the compound fracture? Is it a lining from the clouds, To try to prove some divine rapture? Is it a small seed that if I plant in the ground A lotus will spring? Is it an atom of a cell of some being we cannot see? It is part of me. And for safe-keeping, I like to place it beneath my tongue. And sometimes it seeps into my mouth, The taste of it. And those words are poetry to hear. Hi, everyone. Glad you enjoyed. It's weird how I think sometimes, huh? The strange thing about this -- and most of my poems -- is I don't work for these thoughts as much as they just come into my head. I do editing to them sometime, but not as often as I used to, and never on freestyles (because then it wouldn't be a freestyle anymore). Now, I've FINALLY got some free time. Let's see if I can't get some serious reading done in Voices of the Web. I wish the book were bigger -- everyone deserves to be in this. Mike |
