coteau etoile
(solstice)

navy velvet darkness
spread across diamond studded sky
embracing the earth in arms of night
the evening birds call, and a warm wind whispers
a tale of magic and ancient wisdom
high upon a hill, bathed in cool moonlight
the trees gather round in a mystical circle
swaying in a rythmic dance, fingers stretched to the heavens
in a rapturous proclamation of the eve's glory
rocks speaking of untold mysteries
as the powers of the earth come together
in a magical moment, of neither time nor space
all creation waits in silence, for a sign

then the stars cry out in a  wild chorus
and all earth joins in, voices raised to the sky
heralding the night's coming
faeries and nymphs slip from their secret places
to come dance among the trees with the other night spirits
no evil lurks here, just gentle ghosts of the dark
as the summer night's celebration commences

"Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything."
--William Shakespeare

You've created some beautiful images here, my friend. You've perfectly described the beauty of a summer night.

Exquisite use of imagery and metaphor, Heather, recalling ancient times and religious rites of another place.  Beautiful job!

a really wonderful poem, beautiful images. This needs further reading and shall be put in my library so I may read it again when I am not so sleepy. It is 00:40 here. Not a good time to read poetry.  I am sure to have sweet dreams after this poem.
