I wrote this about my great-great-grandmother. Who died harvesting sugarcane

         Mandinga…
Born free,
Made a slave.
Why should this be?
The middle passage,
the hard work to brave.
Buried under a palm tree,
she went to her grave
Yet she live on in me.

This is a beautiful tribute to your ancestor. Thank you for sharing it with us and reminding us of the one thing we all take for granted: freedom.
