Some Man’s Wife

She walked in my footsteps,
Left no tracks of her own.
A non-entity existing,
Only a clone.

She stood in my shadow,
Never tasting the sun.
Never raced with the wind,
When she could have won.

Tho she had wings,
Never learning to fly.
When she could be soaring,
She didn’t even try.

Never took chances,
On a whim or a dare,
Always believing,
That I would be there.

Be there to save her,
Should she ever fall.
Believing and trusting,
I could be her all.

Never looked at life’s menu,
And all she could taste.
Such beautiful talent,
Such wanton waste.

Now my life is over,
And she’s left alone.
I tried to teach her,
To have a life of her own.

But I never could teach her,
There was more to life
Than hiding in backgrounds
As some man’s wife.

Well, I think its about time we got to have your poems again! This is truly a sad and interesting story, and no happy ending here either. So many possibilities with such potential never become what they should be.  The woman in the piece sounds like she missed something special by being afraid.

And I wonder how often this scenario happens - for both men and women. Sigh...it's a sad thing.

Well done - good writing.

Hardrock,
this poem rings so true. I knew a woman who after her husband, of 55 years, died she only survived him by a few weeks.
She was just unable to contemplate being other than his wife. Great and pertinent poem
Be well

Hmmmmm damn!!  This one brought back some unpleasent memories.  But is so true!  I once lived just as a wife.  I always thought that being HIS wife was all I was suppose to do, no matter how bad he treated me. But I grew up and realized that wasnt what life was all about.  Thanx Hardrck..... nice explaination here.  Words to live by

Hardrock.. I really like this one.. and know so many women like this. But, I also know some who would love to have men who had this outlook, as well. That's what its all about.. letting each other soar!!

Enjoyed your poem.  So many live through their other half, adopting ways until they are convinced it is their way, too.

Wow, this is very nice, I enjoyed it a lot.
I bet it's very easy to be that girl but it must be so boring! Just living in somebody's shadow is such a waste of life! On the other hand, maybe she just didn't have what it takes to shine on her own...
Great food for thought

This was great! I really liked this concept and it's just so true.

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

I hate your socks. I'd like to burn them!
