I never made you any promises,
Never promised it was just 'we two',
Never promised we'd be together,
Were my promises too few?

You wanted more than I was ready to give,
You were wise in some ways,
You said 'Seize the day, seize your opportunity to live!'
Yet I hesitated for it wasn't my day.

You can probably do better,
Someone prettier, smarter or who parties longer,
I'm no good to anyone right now,
You need someone like me but stronger.

You never made any promises either,
None that were for real,
You did keep one though,
The promise that it's my heart you'd steal.

The promise of years from now,
May never be reality,
I'm tired of promises made in moments of emotional passion,
They come back to haunt you and me.

I'm not holding you here,
You are free to go,
And I'll make this last promise,
My love will always be within reach cos neither of us will ever let go.

This is an awesome poem. I know someone who feels exactly this way. My ex girlfriend. She said most of the things you state in your poem. Great piece as always.

Isis,
awesome poem. I'd say promises were well and truly kept.
Be well

Promises are indeed wierd things. Sometimes making promises is the worst thing you could do. Love is always there somewhere though floating on the breeze. Making a connection, going away and coming back again. At least that's what i got from this one. Are you getting any of this?   I enjoyed.

Isis, this has so many meanings for me. I won't go into them all. But I agree, love will be there a long time, for me too. And promises are hard to keep, and even harder when someone you love breaks them. Take care.

Isis,

I'm not sure what is worse, promises that are broken or promises intended, yet never made.  Either way, it leaves such a bittersweet taste in your soul... This was a beautiful and heartfelt poem.. Thank you for sharing it.

Yes Sven it is strange but I do know exactly how you feel about this subject LOL

Whether said on purpose or unintentional or merely with touch and gesture, when those promises fall away or apart, it leaves a bitter feeling in the soul.  Something none of us should be responsible for....

Thanks everyone for reading and glad you all liked it

promises are touchy things. kept, they are so special, and broken, so hurtful. this was a really nice piece.
