It was a dark stormy night Lightening flashed in the sky Echoes of screaming Terrified a small town nearby It was the 28th of October Approaching Halloween… Over two decades ago An unforgettable scene A town called Lafayette Lived a woman named Marie A Voodoo Priestess from the south She lived down by the old oak tree Black heavy velvet draped her body She wandered the town at night Inside her small broken down shack You could see a flickering red light She had a few worshipers Who followed her around They frightened every one who saw them In the sleepy little town Late at night they chanted Livestock disappeared On the windows of their houses Red blood was often smeared Late that fateful evening Came screaming in the dark Waking all the people As the dogs began to bark They couldn’t find the source Of the noises that they heard Until they heard the dreadful sound Of the Priestess’ evil words “I Call to The Gods of Haiti to Hear My Sacred Curse! I Offer to You My Gods The Day of The White Babies Birth! For Whomever Born This Day; Back Luck Will Follow Them Through They will Live For Eternity I Sacrifice Their Fate to You!” At the finale of her curse The lightening struck the ground The woods were set on fire The worshipers were never found In a hospital not faraway it began to rain The lights flickered suddenly A woman screamed in pain As the storm grew more intense Strange colors lit the sky And in the echo of the thunder... Came the sound of a newborns cry "And I still believe you can never have too much fiction because reality is such a bore..." - REA |

This is... hold on lemme find a word for it... INCREDIBLE... I dunno... reminds me of Children of the Corn... I love it!! Mind if I print it out? I'm really into the witch stuff but there's one thing unrealistic about this poem... witches DO NOT HARM, they are gentle. They are to help, movies do not portray this though, they are made out to be these wicked creatures hounding the earth and that is so not true. This is great for Halloween though... awesome work, keep writing ![]() Kristi *^~Do YoU WoRrY ThAt YoU'rE NoT LiKeD, HoW LoNg TiLL YoU BrEaK, YoU'Re HaPpY CaUsE YoU SmiLe BuT HoW MuCh CaN YoU FaKe?*~^ |

Your ability to tell a story rivals nevermore. Such vivid smells. Such understanding, even though brief, of the misunderstood. Timely for sure, and collective through the days. |

Thanks for your responses! Yes, my birthday is indeed October 28. I did a paper in college about Voodooism (we had to choose a religion) and what I learned was creepy! During slavery, so many different african religious groups were forced together that they formed Voodoo, whose religious practices are a combination of many strange African/ Haitian religions. In Louisisana, the religion is quite popular and anything but nice. The people back in the 1800's were known to sacrifice white babies and curse them. I wrote this as a means of justifying all my bad luck...I certainly don't believe it, but my creativity kind of went crazy. I'm glad you like it ![]() ![]() "And I still believe you can never have too much fiction because reality is such a bore..." - REA |

Wow, a beautifully spooky story here. How true is it though? OK we know 10-28-77 is your BDay, but how true is the Voodoo Priestess? You see I had family in Lafayette and infact my great grandmother was a voodoo priestess there. Great poem. You wove a terrific tale. |

In my 29 years, this has to be one of the most awesome pieces of literature I've ever laid eyes on. This ranks up there with Poe in my opinion. This is contructed well and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. So am I to assume this is your birthday? BUT PLEASE tell me you aren't into satanic worship! lmao...trust me I am the farthest thing from a bible thumper you'd ever find....but just poking humor here. Awesome awesome awesome, would love to chat with you about your writing if you have more like this!!!! Jeremy "Those little slices of death, how I loathe them." -Edgar Allen Poe |

HAPPY BIRTHDAY first of all!! I hope it is a day of joy. Somehow.. This poem, my goodness, it is superbly spooky, tinged with realism, and the best explanation I can think of for that string of bad luck. They must have been busy when I was born also. Comment..All witches are not good, though most are. And voodoo priestesses, are a category beyond witches, and I do believe they are there and real. (For the record, I believe in lots of things, good and bad) Now for my one piece of advice..You are so young (yes I am jealous) and beautiful and talented beyond your years. You WILL have a change in fortunes soon. There is no way that couldn't happen. Peace Sandra |

This is a lovely verse, but as a student, and sometime practitioner of Santeria...I must protest, just a bit. Also, as a native Louisianian, the facts here are more than slightly, skewed. Voodoo...quite a word there..but the truth of the religion is more about symbolistic ritual cleansing, and personal responsibility...and Marie Leveau? By trade? A "hair-stylist" with a sympathetic ear and a knowledge of herbalism. Please don't take this as a slight. I do not mean it to be so. Just happens to be a subject near to my heart. Hugs to you. |

ahhhh - see, this explains a lot... ![]() Actually Beth - this is a very well told story - something I find fairly difficult to do without the aid of prose! ![]() C |
