Desert (posted here per Michael's suggestion and Philip's enthusiasm -- LOL ) I wander depths, Sands shifting beneath my insignificance. Shallows tower goldenly on every side, Stretching toward a rippled vision of sky. Sunbeams, stained turquoise, Extend cold ghost-fingers to soothe the flurries Swirling in protest about my trespassing. Now, in cobalt shadow, comes the menagerie: Flitting unearthly or gliding eerie, they move Around me, silent but for the watery whisper of passing. I am a stranger to unblinking eyes, Hardly a curiousity, and they are gone. So it must have been. But on this day, the sky peers, mocking, Reflecting the blue that was and is no more; The sun is never gentle now, but only varies in cruelty. What was sun-kissed shallow, now wind-swept height; What was golden in life stands golden in death. The sands are thirsty now, sullen, Cast in stony waterfalls and frozen waves, Sculpted still in memory of seas. Nothing stirs but what the winds wake, No sound but the rattling of death against death. So it is now, where I wander -- A graveyard of oceans, Rendered in dust and skeletons of trees. YOUR LIFE IS A TEST It is only a test ... If this were your Actual Life, you would have been given better instructions! |

magnificent imagery and a wonderful change up from all the emotional, heartache-y flub that flows here. this is a wonderful painting of a desert. i was thinking of the desert in an Indiana Jones movie. But if the menagerie is the Mafia, and the the "golden life" now standing in "golden death" are casinos, then this is also a fab poem about me hometown of Vegas. =) it's beautiful and voted for. This is gonna stay at the top till the ocean dries up ... I forgot to mention Kess that i just love the inversion in this poem... the way that the ocean floor becomes the desert sands and the shallows of the sea become the hills of the desert ... the way the ghost of the ocean and its denzins inhabit the first stanza and the death of today the second... i have lots more to say about this and i'm gonna keep saying it till you people read the poem and see how damn good it is ....LOL back soon p |

Kess, I didn't comment in CA because I never really understood other than to repeat what others had said. Still it's a beautifully written piece and most enjoyable. Thanks, Pete |

this was very good poetry Kess, you should be proud of yourself that you can evoke such images with a meagre thing like a pen and paper! ~H |

Kess~ Vivid ! 'What was sun-kissed shallow, now wind-swept height; What was golden in life stands golden in death.' Very vividly portrayed. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Kess, your poetry will be remembered long after we've gone to dust. This one needs many reads for me to absorb the whole depth. Of course i'm kind of thick at most times.... Parker [This message has been edited by Haleyja (edited 07-21-2000).] |
