I Know Who You Are

I was sixteen and
you were a blonde, blue-eyed stranger,
who washed my clothes,
made my breakfast,
drove me to school.

Many years later, I wake each morning
and see your face smiling back at me in my mirror.
you, who waited patiently until
I finally discovered
that you had always been there.

Now, when I see myself as a stranger
reflected in the eyes of my children,
I  recognize the sacrifices that you made for me,
your beloved child
and I know who you are.

I feel your pride swelling near my heart,
your laughter in my voice,
your tears against my cheek.
and I take comfort in my discovery
that against all odds,

I have become you. I know who you are.
You are my dear, dear mother, who turned away
all the glittering gifts the world has to offer,
so that you could pass on to me the greatest gift of all.

Yourself.

It's an honor to be the first to reply to this.  What a wonderful tribute to your mother and that wisdom you put to pen.

Debbie~
I greatly enjoyed this.
I've known that 'stranger' and I've 'been' that stranger ....
Beautiful memories it brought to mind.

Thanks everybody!  It is funny that we can't really SEE the loved ones who raise us as REAL people until we are finally standing in their shoes...then it all seems to make sense!

I could only dream of this. My poetry to my mother is of a different nature.
This was beautiful and had I a better relationship with my mother...I would LOVE to share this with her.
Wonderful job.

Debbie~ I think this is wonderful! We have no idea that are parents are real people with emotions and a "life" until we have our own kids and they have no clue that we are real people.....I'm seeing that in my girls' eyes right now......someday, they'll know.   **VOTE**   -SEA

After years of misunderstandings with my mother, I'm glad that we have finally connected!

I hope that someday, maybe years from now, my girls will also find out who I really am...
