Unsung Heroes by Michael Auguste Worried, she checks her sleeping child A fever again but this one mild No heat tonight, she couldn't pay the bill The oven on to help take off the chill A single mother, she does all that she can To raise dear Jen without help of a man Jen's Dad always spends freely on himself Then pleads poverty whenever they need help Five days a week Jen stays at home alone Her mother works so they communicate by phone The doors kept locked, she's not allowed to roam She watches tv until her mother makes it home "Trailer trash!" How can they be so cruel? On their new bikes she sees them ride to school "Her clothes came from Goodwill," they often like to pick Though hurtful always, her skin is now more thick Late one night Jen thought she heard a sound And found her mother in her dressing gown While reading the bills her mother softly wept Jen crept back in bed but that night she hardly slept She wants a job to ease her mother's mind But at ten years old they're very hard to find She cleans the house so her Mom can have some rest Of all the mothers, she thinks hers the very best Her single mother, to Jen, a hero be But not like the ones that they show on the tv The unsung ones who raise their kids alone Who do all they can without a gripe or moan "My Mom is a hero," she'd like to shout out loud But she plays no sports, she couldn't draw a crowd So the hero medal she'll keep close to her heart And with her special memories, she will never part |

Auguste, my friend....... With this beautiful poetry you have just become a hero in my eyes. It amazes me the way you captured the intense hardship of being a single mother! You nailed it, and there's a lot of mothers out there who would applaud you loudly, so I will do it for them here......... THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS!!!! Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Well written my friend. We all need hero's, or at least someone to look up too. Jwesley |

Paula, You and a million other women like you are what this poem is all about. We often have our priorities so messed up that we put sports figures on pedistals and give them hero status. "Real heroes" are often our next door neighbors. And you, my friend, are every bit a hero is my way of thinking. I applaud you. Michael |

Michael-lovely write and so very true. I hope you are able to share this with your mom as it would be her greatest reward for all she gave for so many years...all mom's whether single or not would appreciate your heart in this. |

Sunny, I appreciate your most kind remarks. However, please save your applause and title of hero for those who really deserve it. I'm just me. I'm aware of the problems of women because most of friends are women and have always been. I have a deep respect for womanhood and all it represents. Take care, my friend! Michael |

Michael, your compassion and tender spirit illuminates each line of this piece, my friend. ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

Auguste~ It's a wonderful tribute to all of those 'unsung heroes' .... trying hard to make a difference in their children's lives. Not just women anymore .... lots of men raising their children alone. I'm sure they are included in your song. One of the reasons I mentor kids is to give single parents the opportunity to have some time to themselves. It's a rewarding program for me and for them. Thanks for sharing this very compassionate view. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |

Michael, this brought tears to my eyes as well. I'm a single mom and have been down that road, crying over bills. I love how you portray this mother as a hero in her child's eyes. Take me as I am or watch me as I go |
