I’ve got nine years down on twenty, and I just can’t understand... Why no one comes, and Mama doesn’t write. My brother came for Christmas, nearly seven years ago, And said that he’d come back and bring my wife. Maybe it’s because she wrote that “Dear John” note to me, I don’t suppose I’ve got room to complain. I left her with a boy of five, a girl who’d just turned three, With one on the way, and I don’t know it’s name. I’ve been here in the system for such a long, long time- I don’t know if I could make it on my own. They tell me when to go to bed, get up, and brush my teeth- Decisions are the things that I quit making long ago. Prison’s more than wire, and walls; it is a state of mind- They take your will, and give you nothing back- You sit here in your cell, and dream, and live within the past Getting fat and soft while you are laying in your rack. So between the talk, and dominoes, and gazing through the wire, That pretty well sums up this life of mine. The count has cleared, the whistle blows, they let me shower soon- A glimpse within the mind of one who sits here doing time. < !signature--> Visit My Home Page http://www.geocities.com/montcogunslinger/Hompage.html [This message has been edited by Gunslinger (edited 08-10-2000).] |

Well, I've never been to jail, so I can't say that I can relate. But I've heard about prison and how the inmates live, and this really sums it up. Good work as usual, Gunslinger. Elizabeth Why ME??? |

It's a frightening thought...you describe it just as I would imagine it to be. Great writing, as always, John! Denise |

Gunslinger, I admire so much how you can get inside the mind. The reflections here are poignant, the message secondary, I think. The work, superb. ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |
