I Miss Those Years

by

Auguste

I was born before astronauts
And we hadn't yet walked on the moon
TV was in the early stage
But there was color coming soon

There were no satellites in space
No calculators in the school
And no cable tv to watch
By hand we did things, that the rule

And no personal computers
No digital, no lazer light
They couldn't scan my groceries
Though crude, life felt a bit just right

There were no car phones to be seen
No microwaves to heat our meal
No e-mail, just the paper kind
That seemed to have a special feel

Our cars were steel, not plastic then
We'd wind a watch to the keep time
No monitors to edit poems
Just paper used to make our rhyme
We lived with warheads that stayed aimed
To rain destruction from the air
Girls wore crinolines and bobbie socks
And the boys would grease their hair

There was no plastic money then
No transplants, MRI's and such
No ultrasounds, CD's, ac
It seems, friends kept in better touch

No FM and no stereo
We somehow managed to survive
No Walkman's there to hurt our ears
Yet we were still able to thrive

Less complicated were those days
No chat, real voices then to hear
And no electric typewriters
And drive-ins to us were so dear

"Loaded" meant a different thing
And "memory" was in our head
To "download" meant to put it down
We couldn't "save" the words we said

The days were far more simple then
Less cars, less people, and less fears
Such days will never be again
You don't know how I miss those years

Mark,

Thanks a lot for the nice comments.  And yes, it would be so nice sometimes to be able to turn the clocks back to a simpler, more gentle world

Michael, I'm glad to see this here. I miss those days so much! Sharing such nostalgia gives one a wistful warmth, and you've done just that with your reminiscing.

Sudhir,

I hadn't gotten a "WOW" since I've been posting, until I got yours.  It made me smile.  Thanks a lot.

Claire,

Thank you for the nice words and like you, I also miss those days.  There's a lot to be said for technology and the advances in medicine since that time, but I sometimes feel it also took a lot of our innocence with it.
