The River

Walking down by the river
just before the dawn,
everything looks so different
in the eerie light of the early morn.
Mist swirls among the trees
moving away from the river
like it’s trying to escape
the spirit of the water.
The river stretches out
like brown arms reaching
for something that can’t be seen
in the depths, hiding.
Unseen in the mist
is a steamer going by,
the sound of it’s hollow whistle
is like a mournful cry.
Light plays on the water
from the sun as it awakes
putting all in perspective
as the new day breaks.

I love rivers, oceans, lakes and the such but there is something about a river that just sort of adds that bit of nastalgia to it's beauty and you have captured a bit of that in your words.  Lovely verse and so calming as I watch the steamer go by

I wrote a poem about a river too. (River Walk) Check it out.  Aren't rivers so beautiful in the early morn.  Just can't get enough of that scenery.  Your poem made me invision the river once more.  There so majestic.
You've penned this one so well.

Dee~
What a lovely vision you've painted with
your phrases.

'Mist swirls among the trees
moving away from the river
like it’s trying to escape
the spirit of the water.'

Oh, how lovely this is !
