I never have liked cruise control - I feel so insecure
With no foot on the pedal I can never feel quite sure
My safety is intact, you see, though my hand's on the wheel...
The thought may be unjustified but that's just how I feel.

My life is now on cruise control and I don't like that, either!
It seemed a normal thing to do to give myself a breather
But I'm just flying down the road of Life without a goal
Without a way to change my lane 'cause I'm on cruise control.

I don't speed up....I don't slow down...I cannot even pass
Small obstacles because I don't have my foot on the gas.
I'm being whisked along as if my life were not my own
And, though I'm in the driver's seat, I'm sitting there alone.

As I fly down the road toward some future or beyond
I worry, should I use my foot, if my life will respond
Or did the years I raced with wild abandon take their toll
And leave me destined to live out my life on cruise control?

Balladeer

I love it - I like being in control too but every once in a while you have to sit back and watch the world go by.  Chill Out as they say.  I look forward to reading your work - keep them coming!

I've felt like this a time or two...you've expressed it wonderfully! (but of course!)

put your pedal to the medal!
watch out for that windy road...
sometimes pavement starts to settle
when we carry too much load.
cruising on the highway, Poet,
can be dangerous, indeed!
sometimes speed and curves don't show it
when roadblocks come to impede.
fly on down the superhighway,
cruise can be alright, y'know...
say outloud, "I Did it My Way"
when speed limits get too low.

*********
whoops! you inspired me... !!!
as always, Michael.. i LOVE your poetry!

Ah Michael, you had me smiling from the first line through! Quite a feeling it is, to be automated and running life's course without a goal ... hmmmm, I know that one a little too well. Perhaps it's time to shift gears and wing it! What do ya say?!?  Loved this Balladeer!

Best wishes,
/Kit

You're cruising down the highway,
You've selected cruise control.
Will you please get outta my way?
You're on the wrong side of the road!

Besides, I didn't know cruise control kicked in at 5 mph - lol.

BTW - I really enjoyed your metaphor for losing direction in life.  Great writing, too, Mike.

So speed up will ya......we won't stop ya one bit...matter of fact we will thank you.  Very ingenious metaphor and I tend to agree with you....once we get in a pattern that feels comfortable then it is hard to go out and take those chances we deserve to take.  Great write from you sir but of course we all know that when we come in to read you.

I would have to agree with Mark. We all know what to expect when we walk in your door. Some more brilliant poetry.

Balladeer
This one I thought I would get a laugh
But when reading, I realized that I've
           felt this way too.
I've often traveled down the roads of time
           with my life on cruise.

I seriously thought that you were about
           to write a famous pun.
Just to get back at that new poet, Melton
        and the old pirate, LngJhn.

One day Melton had you crash your car
and guess who you hit; LngJhn.
They had you drink a toast to a "Miracle"
and then waited for the police to come.

They really set you up this night
when you were taking a salutary cruise
They left you holding the bottle
and knew the police would smell the booze.

Check out the poem by Melton L. Culberth title
       "It's A Miracle"< !signature-->

  Mr. 'Deer'.....
Just look at it this way...the cruise control leaves you free to do more important things!!!   Great poem...loved it!

Deer, I thought this piece was going to be a kicker, then you moved me with wondrous words, surprising synergy, and elegant emotion. Not fair!

But on the other hand I though the poem was and is wonderful.
