The lighted sign across the street says ninety-nine degrees,
I just spent my last hundred to pay my entry fees...
Wore out boots, my riggin’ bag, a fourteen year old truck-
I’d like to think tonight I’ll break this long streak of bad luck.

I guess it started last year, perhaps the one before-
I was placing high at all the shows, and running up my score.
Then a bad bull up in Denver hurt me mighty bad-
That big old stack of doctor’s bills took every dime we had.

We sold the two horse trailer, and then we sold the cows-
My drinking got us out of sorts, we had a lot of rows...
No answer when I call the house, for two weeks, maybe more,
I guess you got your belly full, and walked right out the door.

I checked my draw, the stock looks good, I ride, I’ll come out flush-
I just might miss the Beaumont show, and take some time for us..
I ought to nap before I ride, it’s hot in that old truck-
I sure do hope tonight I’ll break this long streak of bad luck.

Then Johnny died in ninety-six, him and me were close-
Next to you, and Billy Joe, I guess I miss him most...
When it rains it pours, I guess, I hope them broncs can buck-
I need to make a shiny ride, to break this run of luck

Forty-three last April, I know I’m gettin’ old-
Too old to think of Vegas, or hope to win the gold...
I wish you were here watching me, But since you’re not, Why, shucks!
Tonight I have to try and break, this long streak of bad luck.

I don't know ANYONE who can write so many poems with the same theme and make every one compelling. You are a talented man, John.

Dear Troubadour, I heartily agree with those before me ~ a talented man, indeed. (And you write well, too)

Wonderful tale, such a real look at a life.
