It wasn't much to look at,
all tattered and worn,
encircled by a silver frame
to keep it from harm.
Just an old black and white photo
on which Grandma used to gaze,
as it sat upon the piano
holding pride of place.
Whenever Grandma held it
tears would mist her eyes,
even though it's been thirty years
since he said his last goodbyes.
She thought they'd grow old together
till death took him from her side.
Now all she has is his photo
and the tears she tries to hide.

Wonderful poem , I very much enjoyed reading it, and know the feeling well, I hope that the person isn't you . I hate it when that happens .

She will forever have to memories and the love in her heart and one day will again walk with him.  Never easy to go on without one's true strength but nice to know that their strength is left behind for us to make us stronger.  Lovely read and full of wonderful sentiment.

Tom, this was my Grandma's story from my perspective. (I lived with her for some time after he died.)

Mark, she was lost without him, but as you say, she now walks with him. I believe they are happy now, the two halves back together.

Thank you both for reading this.

Dee this was well done and showed a sensitive caring nature and the strong commitment of love.

Very lovely Dee ... the warmth and love in your sentiments honours the deep commitment your grandparents cherished. Thank you for sharing these tender words, nicely penned.

Well this brought back memories. My grandpa died 4 yrs ago June 12th of next year. It was always amazing to me how my grandma gets along without him. You can tell she misses him, but she has a picture that she loves too....
I had to read this poem. Especially when I saw your member's name was Dee. Same as my grandpas. What a trip down memory lane.

Dee,

This is a wonderful poem about how love endures and so well written.

Dee, I am lately seeing a lot of poems about Grandfathers, and always I feel so much when I read them. You did an outstanding writing about this subject. My Grandpa has been gone 11 years now, and soon my Grandmother will join him. Its sad and hard to deal with, even after so many years, he was such a wonderful person.
Anyway, my memories are clouding my vision here, as this is your poem, not mine. It was appreciated much.

Kethry and Kit, my grandparents were never afraid to show their love in front of us and I felt I had to write something for the family to remember that.

Cuddlez, it always seemed amazing to me that Grandma could just carry on without Granddad when they had been together for so long. I guess she was just a determined lady. By the way, my member name is short for Deirdre, so in a way it's my name.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

catalinamoon, I'm glad you found something for yourself in my words, that is what I aim for. To touch someone or bring back long forgotten memories for them, to me, means I have done well.
Cherish your Grandmother and spend as much time with her as you can. Even if she doesn't know it will help you.
Take care,
Dee
