The Boy Without a Birthday

by

Michael Auguste

He saved the bags from lunches spent
And each day brought them home from school
So that they could be used again
For in his home this was a rule

Two sandwiches of potted meat
Wrapped in a bread sack he would hide
The other kids would buy their lunch
He never opened his bag wide

No chips, no apples and no grapes
Sometimes no potted meat for bread
Just mayonaise on the slices
Of how this felt, he never said

He'd never cross his legs at school
A sock would show right through his shoe
He used cardboard to block the hole
That was the best that he could do

New bikes were in the neighborhood
On Christmas all the kids got one
But he would never have a bike
So never know that kind of fun

Each year his birthdays came and went
No cakes or presents ever there
It was just any other day
He soon learned not to even care

The clothes he wore were always used
No money for new clothes to buy
No movies, theme parks, vacations
He never bothered to ask why

His parents did the best they could
He misses them now that he's grown
In poverty there still was love
Though bikes he was to never own

Nothing can take away from the pain of those
"have nots" but the one thing that you did
have shows through in all of your work
Michael...Love.  You have a kind and
beautiful soul...all the money in the world
can't buy that.  Fantastic writing~

Money does not buy the love that comes through.  Growing up without gives a better appreciation of what you have later on.  Excellent writing and very poignant.

Butterflies,

I do so appreciate your kind words and you're right...I did have love...the rest were just "things"...thank you.

Michael--your kind heart is a product of the love that you were given, not the birthday presents.  Great poem!

Eloise,

Thank you for the nice words...and yes, you do have more of an appreciation because of what your childhood didn't have.  Love is something I never had to do without as a child so I feel very fortunate in that respect.

Take care,

Michael

Michael..Always remember that everything goes according to plan. And know that because of the way things were then, is what made you what you are today..a loving, caring, and
compassionate person! Warm thoughts!
P.S. Read my profile signature...;-)
Oh..I forgot..the poem was great!!!

Michael~
Tenderly rendered from a heart that obviously
grew in the riches of love.

Happy Birthday, Michael !
Yeah, I know ... but Happy Birthday anyway !

Excellent poem.  I cant say that I understand where you are coming from in this one, because I was financially fortunate.  But one thing I can understand, is your appreciation for what you did have.

Michael~
This is a great story you have told, sad but wonderful words of wisdom at the end.
Even when there are no fancy toys or such if there is love and laughter your world always seems bright.
Well said Michael

Michael, that you have chosen to express this painful yet poignant memoir in verse tells so much about the man the boy grew up to be. Wonderful writing, dear friend.

Kitty,
I agree with what your "signature" has to see...true words of wisdom.  Thank you.

Marge,
How did you know it was my birthday?  Want to guess my age?  Thanks

One Who,
Thank you for the "excellent"

Tracie,
I agree with what you've said and I thank you.

Claire,
I appreciate the sweet compliment and thank you for it.

You don't need to have had the material things in life to have grown into a kind, caring and loving soul Michael....anyone can see that from your writings.

I agree, material things are not as important as the love from your family, however, I know these  torments were hard to bear from a child's point of view. But I think you've turned out to be a fine man!
