The Birthday Gift

For your birthday I would give
Joy as long as you shall live
A home where love and peace abound
A bounteous table to sit around

For your birthday I would wish
A warming hearth, a hearty dish
And laughter pouring from the room
And lots of stories to consume

For your birthday I would sing
A song of life’s most precious thing
The love that’s in a child’s heart
Reaching out, though we’re apart

For this day, my wish would be
That you could be right here with me
All my dreams would then come true
If I could hold and comfort you

For your birthday I would give
My love as long as I shall live
And pray that there will be a day
When things don’t have to be this way

Thank you all for your lovely comments (Sudhir always so eloquent) This poem was written as from a parent who for some reason is separated from their child. This situation is all too common.
Thanks
Liz
