This was written for a friend of Martie's who is a country singer. But I have an old guitar, too, and at times it was my best friend

This Old Guitar

I’ve been out on the music trail
I guess I’ve travelled far
I never needed much in life
Besides this old guitar

I know every stop along the way
From Charlotte to LA
And I’ll never stop as long as this
Old friend will have me play

My soul drifts on the subtle sounds
And rhythms of a song
And this guitar just lifts me up
And carries me along

I’ve had some women in my day
They came and went their way
But this old friend, it knows my moods
And it is here to stay

It’s seen me through some rough times
And it will until the end
I guess you’d say in many ways
It’s been my closest friend

I never touched a woman
Like I touch these tender strings
They do just what I tell them
And they don’t demand a thing

There’s nothing like the soft sweet chords
To soothe my aching heart
No better friend in all the world
Than a mellowed old guitar

So I think I’ll keep her by my side
When I can’t play no more
I know her sound will be here
In my heart forever more

Elizabeth,
I don't play guitar, but I wish I did after reading your poem.
Be well

I don't play either but this is the feeling the music gives me. Wonderful!

A wonderful song, Liz. I feel the same way about my guitar. Music has a way of not turning its back on you.

Elizabeth -

This 'flows' so smoothly - I felt carried along as on the crest of a wave - and the femionization of the instrument- worded so beautifullly - this is a treasure

Liz, you've created beautiful music with this piece. I enjoyed it much!

Liz- i know this feeling well!!... there's nothing like my very precious old friend... my Martin D-28S... which was unfortunately stolen   some years back... but i'll never ever forget that guitar...

i have another, but it's just not the same...

Thanks for your wonderful poetry... this one is very special!

Thank you for your kind comments on this poem. Wilfed, claire and Doreen can understand why a guitar is your most faithful friend. Now we have another guitar poem on the board, so this one will now join in the serenade
Liz
And Martie, you are the one who best understands this poem

O Elizabeth, now you've instilled words that will always string and strum along...and have inspired yet another to write a complimentary piece [coming soon to a blue screen near you!]

Well done!
