The Garden There is a garden where I walked Along the river’s shore And watched the gentle Ashley Flowing as it did before Through the gates of Charleston And out into the sea But first it passes by this place Of sweet tranquillity An old plantation in the south Magnolia is it’s name The gardens so exquisitely Live up to noted fame I love to sit and dream beside The Ashley as it flows And never tells the secrets Of a past it surely knows The old plantation house is there Behind the draping moss The river flows in reverence To its heritage and loss The loves, the war, the history Were witnessed on this shore And remain a silent memory Of this river evermore But still it captures moonbeams As it did so long ago And floats them on its ripples In the never-ending flow Lovers still can watch them gleaming From the garden’s shore And mirror secrets of the past Of loves that came before Elizabeth Santos |

Dear Liz, This is so lovely. It reminds me of my chilhood. My father is a cajun from Louisiana, and we went there every summer. Love, Ellie Summers haunting melody that awakens the butterflies, calling them to join the dance in their silent song of praise to God. eL |

Beautiful Liz. You've woven grace, tranquility, and history very skillfully into this pleasant poem, and let the continuous flow of the river symbolize the ongoing rhythm of life...I really enjoyed it. ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

Your words have a very calming effect on the reader...yet I feel intoxicated by the river itself. Simply lovely. Don't care what people say Just follow your own way Don't give up and use the chance To return to innocence. -Enigma |

But still it captures moonbeams As it did so long ago And floats them on its ripples In the never-ending flow Lovers still can watch them gleaming From the garden’s shore And mirror secrets of the past Of loves that came before Liz, this is so amazing of a write. I love old plantation homes and you have captured the romance of days gone by. beautiful write. |

Hey! Watch it! I was here foist. Outta my way! *in my best Curly of Three Stooges voice* Liz, they all crowded me out - I really enjoy your poetry - it flows so well, and is so solid throughout. This poem left me sitting by the Ashley, thinking of memories and love. |

Elizabeth - indeed a journey into your word. I felt I was there with someone I loved. I felt the warmth so deeply. A dream land, I'm sure. Beautifully done. |

Thank you all for your lovely remarks. Magnolia plantation outside of Charleston has the most exquisite never ending garden , with that white curved bridge that you often see in photographs. But what I loved most was just sitting by the Ashley. Truly a Gone with the Wind scene Liz |

Hmmm, running rivers, what the imagination can take grasp of here...you know, no river ever runs silently, don't you?...*g* HUSG "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." |
