His Elusive Muse

The poet struggled, pen in hand
with night's elusive verse
Through tumbling hours upon the clock
What words! What words! he'd curse

And as his wearied mind grew dull
the dawn invited rest
He fell into exhausted dream
'til daylight's closing crest

Before his eyes could drink of dusk
upon awaking there
he felt the tracing tendrils' touch
of heather scented hair

He woke to moistened lips and felt
their warmth upon his cheek
Her words were more like a whisper
so softly did she speak

He gazed into enticing eyes
as last sun rays were spent
Her carmine hair in lamp light glow
The room was now her scent

She led him to his writing desk
as shadows filled the room
Another lamp she set in place
to help dispel the gloom

Before he could begin protest
the pen was in his hand
Her nearness drove his heart to depths
his mind could not command

With pen in ink and then to page
he set about to write
Her velvet fingers 'pon his neck,
this creature of the night

So near, each breath was one of her
Her fragrance was his air
And on he wrote into the night
his hand guided with care

Upon the wall the clock chimed two
and still his hand did write
This muse in dress of sea-green silk
must leave with coming light

His words, intoxication's own
dripped fertile endless ink
So close, his lady's fragrant form
He wrote, but could not think

The pages filled with brilliant rhyme,
an epic verse composed
She turned to him and with a kiss
his book, she gently closed

The stars were dipped in lace that night
but soon they were no more
as darkness swallowed by dawn's light
cast day upon the floor

With aching eyes, for her he searched
This muse, his lady fair
but all remained, a written book
... and scent of heathered hair

All I can say is WOW!! You've got some amazing lines in here... such as "the dawn invited rest He fell into exhausted dream 'til daylight's closing crest"  and "His words, intoxication's own dripped fertile endless ink".  Wonderful!!

I have not nearly the time I need to reply to this, Claire (and Michael Auguste) -- but I had to let you know that I read it and I was swept.  Beautifully written.

Wow!  If I repeated all my favorite lines I'd have to retype the entire poem.  This is a wonderful piece obviously written by two very talented poets.  Great Job!

When I saw the two names together, I knew this would be a great one , and it is. Your poet pens compliment each other. It is a wonderful and beautiful poem. Next book, maybe?

Claire and Michael~

What exquisite beauty is found in the
combining of your talents.

Michael, you've beckoned a gentle muse and
touched her as she's touched you.

Claire, what a gifting awareness.

I would hope that this summoning will come again.
Two gentle spirits ... inspired and sharing.

English Rose, we thank you for the "breathtaking" and for your enthusiastic response, and are glad to know that you enjoyed reading this. It is a bit lengthy, but once we began, the story simply took off on its own, I believe. I think we were a little out of breath, too, by the time we finished!

Hi Butterflies,

"stunning"...I do so like that word...   Both Claire and I do thank you so much for your wonderful comments.  We really enjoyed writing this together and I'm sure it will be just the first of several we'll one day work so closely on.  She's a remarkable talent.
