* "The Carpenters" was the only "pop" group my parents would let us listen to on 8-Track tape on long car rides (many moons ago), LOL ... I became hopelessly addicted to them (Ok, so they also let us listen to Tom Jones, Helen Ready and The Mike Curb Congregation) Showing my age here ... LOL! I was inspired by Elizabeth Santo's reference to Karen Carpenter in her poem "Writing My Own Eulogy": /pip/Forum33/HTML/001697.html *** Ode to "The Carpenters" "We've Only Just Begun" to see "This Masquerade" we play, So "Let Me Be The One" to brighten Up this "One Fine Day". Since "Rainy Days and Mondays" Don't elude to "Fun, Fun, Fun", I thought I'd take a moment ... Let you know "Our Day Will Come". Some day we'll "Sing" a song or two, No "Superstar", or prize, Just reminisce upon "The Night ..." That "... Has a Thousand Eyes" "For All We Know", when looking back, "It's Yesterday Once More", And we will be "Top of the World", "Those Good Old Dreams" come forth. Our memories become in part, A brief "Ticket to Ride", Where "There's a Kind of Hush" bestowed, Upon our simple lives. For "When It's Gone", I ask myself, "Where Do I Go From Here", I "Bless the Beasts and Children", As I shed a gentle tear. For never will I say the words, "Goodbye to Love", I pray, My memories will always shield "The Parting of Our Ways". "(They Long To Be ...)" so "... Close to You", These memories of the heart; "Don't be Afraid" in times to come, For which they are a part. And "From This Moment On", I know, I'll always have a way; To feel your warmth, to reminisce, As "Only Yesterday" ... "You Touched Me When We're Dancing", Just "Because We Are In Love"; So hold me now, my darling one, While heaven smiles above. /Kit McCallum *Thanks for this wonderful place to post such little memories "Da Doo Ron Ron" ![]() |

Kit.... This was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a good thing the Carpenters did a lot of songs, eh? Seriously, I always thought Karen had the voice of an angel, and to this day, I'm saddened that we lost her. Thank you for this poem! Today is a gift.... That is why they call it 'the Present'! |

Isn't this fun, Kit, taking songs and making them all come together? I so enjoyed doing just that with a Tribute to Neil Diamond and Anticipating Gordon Lightfoot. Wasn't it so very good of them to give us something meaningful to do? And you DID it so WELL! |

I too was one of those that fell in love with Karen's voice and wish so much that she was still with us. Angels kissed her voice and her heart and she will forever be a part of my music library. My favorites... "(They Long To Be ...)" so "... Close to You", and "Top of The World" Thank you for sharing the memories. |

wonderful use of the titles ~S~ I remember being in 4th row for a carpenter's concert at Pine Knob ages ago - their albums are still treasured. I must comment also- for you must be my daughter's age - we had 8-track for a cross country trip. Tracy played "copacabana" I swear a 1000 times. We got back with Kenny Rogers and Lucille ~g~ |

~Denise: You're welcome Denise .. glad you're old enough to enjoy! lol ![]() ~Sunshine: Thanks Sunshine ... I remembered your wonderful verse "Tribute to Neil Diamond and Anticipating Gordon Lightfoot". It was wonderful, I loved them too. This was probably my inspiration for doing this piece when the mood hit. Thank you for this wonderful idea! ![]() ~CaveCanem: Lived across the street from them? Sigh ... movie star eyes batting ... that's neat! ![]() ~Prometheus: I shall, and thanks! ![]() ~PoetdeVine: I'm not sure "what" we'd do without it ... it would be pretty darn boring eh? lol ![]() ~Auguste: Thanks Michael ... I loved their wonderful songs so, glad you enjoyed them! ~Oh2BeMe: Addicted is a good word for it ... afraid that's the case here... thanks! ~Elizabeth: That's one of my all time favorites ... one of those "shower songs" ya know? ![]() ~Mark: Ahhhh, 2 of my favorites also, but then they all were .. she was an angel of song, no question. ![]() ~Wilfred: Smiling here .. I'm not sure your daughter's age, but I'm pushing 40, so how's that for coming close? I still remember the 8 track breaking on "Dead Man's Curve" part way through the song. I'm so incredibly jealous that you made it to a concert of theirs ... what a treasured memory that would be for me if I'd had the opportunity. Thanks for sharing these wonderful memories Wilfred! ~Bonnie: "We've Only Just Begun" was my husband's and my song, sung at the signing of the register at our wedding ... sigh ... so many moons ago ... ![]() ~Parker: Yes, that was a wonderful song Parker ... that was part of their "Yesterday Once More Medley" where they did spoof radio outtakes. I can still hear the guy saying "That was The Night has a Thousand Eyes ... one of Bobby Dees biggest hits! All right ... right now I've got Mark Rudolph of North Hollywood California ooon the line .... MMMMark are you there???" Sigh .. memories ... ![]() Much appreciation to all, /Kit |

Over 30 and loved them all, especially "Rainy Days and Mondays", throw in some Gordon Lightfoot and some serious mellowing begins to happen. Very nicely written tribute. |

Kit - IMHO, this type of poetry is one of the hardest to master because the lines are essentially prewritten, and it's up to you to splice them into the poem intelligently. You have done a wonderful job with this poem. Talk about flexing muscles! I love this poem for the apparent ease with which it was written, when I know you must have worked really hard to make it look that way. Great job, Kit! |
