with mast lifted defiantly to the dark'ning sky
the battle-scarred schooner fought the raising waves
riding each crest, braving the mounting swells
drawn on towards safety, and home
by a pin-point of light, far off on the horizon
sometimes the light flickered, in the storm's fury
but in a moment it was back again, pale and white
against the backdrop of dark storm night

in the glass eye of the lighthouse
she stood, keeping watch over the night
her hair loose from the walk to the lighthouse
falling down over her shoulders
damp and curling from the storm
she braved to keep the watch here
for the old lightkeeper had fallen ill
and his weak limbs couldn't manage
the lighthouse steps tonight
and a fierce storm had been brewing
all afternoon, angry and menacing
foretelling doom to all who coursed the seas

the schooner's captain held fast to the wheel
willing his ship and crew to safety
unable to give up and give in to the storm
and lifting his face into the rain, he cursed the skies
damn you wind! damn you rain!
I will not let you take my ship from me
I'll fight every wave and swell
I will bring my crew safely home this night!
I'll reach my love, the woman who waits
all the while not knowing it was she,
who kept the light bright
as he guided his ship towards home
following the glow she kept bright for him
