Mark's Challenge Offering for verse #1 A vagrant me stood by the riverside, Picking pebbles to kill plentiful time, Picked one, and then picked another Until they were many doing a mime. I chose a pebble, a circular one ~ A flick of my wrist, I let it slide Let it swim past the riverbank And reach out to the other side. And it cut through a tender green stem Of a young white lily, fully in bloom, A painful howl, I heard a lover wail And eyes met a toad, shadowed in gloom. To my innocent look, added the shame, Lost and drowning, all in suddenness, Offering an innocuous excuse, so lame, Horses of guilt trampled nature's finesse. As if in reaction, my palms moved apart Dropping pebbles of time, thus collected, All dropping down in the beating of a heart Taking with them past moments recollected. Now, I sit by the riverside woebegone Soaking up yesterday's haunt, spiritless Knowing, if and when have come and gone And gone is here to taunt, dry and witless. --- [This message has been edited by Sudhir Iyer (edited 08-16-2000).] |
