I'm collecting hugs today
part payment of the debt
for the years I sheltered you
from bitterness, regret
for the years of sacrifice
ere you were not yet grown
I'm harvesting your love today
for life's seeds I've sown.

I'm collecting smiles today
I have none of my own,
and a smile from a stranger
can make me less alone
and if a stranger, soon a friend
can by a smile be known
then I'm collecting sad, sweet smiles
to make them all my own.

I'm collecting hugs and smiles
to help me feel my worth
from friends and close acquaintances
and from all the children, fostered and by birth
when I'm done collecting
these hugs and all these smiles
hopefully they'll measure
your love for yards and miles.

I'm sure what you have sown earlier,
Will return to be harvasted,
as words place so well,
harvasted us all a bit of poetry,
for our eyes to feast upon.
