Along the lines of Jim's questioning about the "ibble's!" Which goes where? (I think I know, but I usually spell it wrong the first time anyway... ) |

Poet Devine is right. This is one of those odd cases where a two different words are spelled the exact same way! The difference is in the form. One is a verb pronounced SEH' puh rayt as in "I will separate the good from the bad" The other is an adjective pronounced SEH' puh rit or SEHP' rit. as in "His poems were separate entities." No wonder English is so hard to learn for those who didn't grow up under its strange diction! It is a wonderful language however for expressive poetry! Later. SDJ |

ditto stephanos... something more to add... words disparate and desperate... check out the pronunciation breaks... the 'per' and the 'pa' desperate: des.per.ate disparate: dis.pa.rate both are adjectives, have a "ly" and a "ness"added at the end to make an adverb and a noun... desperate comes from despair while disparate comes from separate (thats the connection ) and separate originates from "set apart a pair" ... interesting, is it not??? regards, sudhir |
