Ok, so perhaps I, the Poet deVine, do use an excessive amount of commas. Therefore, I ask you gentle people to kindly tell me the proper time to use them. Is it after a thought, after a certain word, before a certain word, whenever I want to take a breath, when I've run out of things to say, when I want to list ideas or just whenever it suits me.

My attempt at comma-dee!

PdV:

Typically you should use commas (1) in a series of three or more terms with one conjuction, (2) to enclose parenthetical expressions, and (3) before a conjuction introducing an independent clause.

I'd suggest consulting Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" if you have any other questions.  Brad tells me there is an online version.  Maybe he will be kind enough to share the link with us.

Here it is. Actually commas are one of the tougest forms of punctuation to master.  I don't deny that I have an itchy comma finger.  The basic rules are give here.

Actually, PdV.... If the truth be known - I use all these other silly "and rulebreaking" hyperbolic ellipses and dashes and stuff instead of commas.... but not in my "real" writing.... But.. They break my thoughts apart - course they were, no doubt, fragmented already....

BTW - I think you could use one more comma in your post here. You really should separate your last clause off with a comma... "idea, or".... ya see? So, I'd say that you aren't a such creature of hyperbolic comma after all....

Hmm, I’d say, after taking this in consideration, and sitting on it for a while, you can use comma’s and comma’s, or was that comma’s, in many different ways, that is, in my honest opinion, but who really cares what I think, as I’m the Dutchie, trying to learn some English, which is really a good thing you know, and this is such a wonderful place. Hmmm, did I use too many comma’s ?
