Your question:

In writing, do you feel that sometimes there isn't a word that you feel can describe what you're writing about??

If so, do you make up your own words??

And, if you do that. . . what are they?  And why did you make them up?

Your answers. . . :

To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world.

I make up words if there's a word that doesn't normally use a certain prefix or suffix, but could.  I'd give you an example but it rarely happens and it's hard to think of a decent example, but you all know what I'm talking about.
"The room filled with a great feeling of ungoodness."  Like that, kind of?
Anyone know what I'm saying?

Concieted??  Impossible!  That would be a fault!

Once in a while I make up words.  In the following example, I made up "meadowverse" to describe a small bird's universe.  I feel it worked great for the poem.

spilling
melodic messages
throughout
a chromatic meadowverse

Let's be specific in our terminology.  If you're coming up with new action words, it's known as "inverbsion."  Coining descriptive words is called "adjection."  If you're creating names for things, it's "renouning".

Shouldn't meadowverse theoretically have been meadow-verse though?

Sven...then why wouldn't universe be uni-verse???  I was trying to show this small creature's limited perspective of its "universe".   Here is the entire poem:

she dances in the swaying trees
with pirouettes and ballyhoos and coos and coos........
fearlessly flittering
care-less-ly
from leafy perch to leafy perch
springtime joy
warmed
deep within her tiny throat
erupts!......spilling
melodic messages
throughout
a chromatic meadowverse
from leafy perch to leafy perch
care-less-ly
fearlessly flittering
with pirouettes and ballyhoos and coos and coos........
she dances in the swaying trees

Ok, Mike, a meadowverse.  But and ACCIDENTAL meadoverse?  Does that presuppose an accidental universe?

Interloper...

I'm not sure that I have suggested that anything is "accidental" here.  Possibly the word "care-less-ly" might read in that direction???  Maybe I should re-edit it to
"care less-ly"....minus one hyphen....to reflect a carefree manner.  (Think I'm getting a headache thinking about it.LOL)

Hey Mike...(it's Severn not Sven by the way... )

Universe wouldn't be uni-verse as it is already an established word - yours is not. That was the point...within your context it works of course...I was merely speaking from a technical point of view.

Yes Interloper - where did you get accidental from?

Lol...I think care-less-ly is an interesting modification...why the hyphens out of interest?

K (very much Severn heh)

Severn...(slapping my head against the file cabinet!) Duh!!!  You're right, it is Severn!  Sorry!

Now I understand what you're getting at with the "meadow-verse" and technically, you are probably correct.  The hyphen also seems to call more attention to the word so I'm going to include it in my copy.  (I'm not very good with "technical" so I guess you have to spell it out for me.*S*)

"care-less-ly"...as I write my poems, I usually read them aloud for meter/word flow.  I felt/hoped that the hyphens would briefly slow the meter just as a small bird might briefly stop to rest on a branch.  I suppose I could have used *** or /// or... ... ... to break the word up, but the hyphen was the first thing that came to mind.  Also, by breaking the word up as I did, I think it provided a double meaning.  "Without caution" and "carefree".  A fine line divides these two meanings but I think they both describe the appearance of a joyful bird caught up in her springtime joy.

Thanks for pointing these things out to me.*S*

K, people are always getting us confused. . . why do you think that is???

Seriously though. . . I like the idea of invented words. . . but, then again, I'm strange that way. . .

I like the idea of "Uni-verse" as being "one verse". . . with verse being a "place of being, somewhere where you exist". . . it's just the way that my mind works when I see something like this. . .

Thanks Mike!!!
