Remembering to Forget

They say your very first true love
Is one you can’t forget
For it awakens all the passions
That you felt when first you met

The young and tender heart is but
A victim of its youth
And remains forever blinded
By the stark and painful truth

It remembers but the pleasures
And the love from deep within
And forgets the rude betrayals
Of the heart it didn’t win

First love stays with you all your life
It interrupts your day
With thoughts of things he promised
And funny things he’d say

And your heart remains forever
Behind denial’s chamber door
And remains forever wanting
What it almost had before

But then a twist of fate can come
And change your point of view
When suddenly you meet somebody
Wonderful and new

And you realize all those years of want
Were spent in useless fret
And now you find it easy
To remember to forget

Green with envy here!  another perfect portrayal, reading your work is like having
the perfect wine with the perfect dinner, and
then forgetting all that because you're having the perfect conversation.

You hit the nail on the head - I just keep forgetting to remember to forget...LOL  Somebody help me remember...remember to foget that is.

Beautiful poem, Liz,  it is amazing how the right person can make all the "fret" disappear.

Elizabeth, my friend~
Mam, you've sure got a way with words.

My 'first love' is still a friend so dear.  He is the yardstick by which others either measure up or don't.

Some are worth remembering forever.

Thank you all for the comments. I don't    believe you ever stop loving someone,  you just have to put it in  perspective. As Michael said, you forget to remember to forget.

Maybe when something touches the heart like love, you don't really want to forget. I loved your poem. So true and so sweet.

I haven't been in love before so I cannot relate to this. However, I shall keep it until that first love happens...and then its wisdom I will treasure. It is a lovely poem, I can only look forward to when I will better understand all the emotion therein!

Love and hugs,
Lizzie
