14,000 THINGS TO BE HAPPY ABOUT (#41) Oh, golly, the next "happy" subject I'm supposed to write a poem about is the odor of pennyroyal, dill, begamot, sage, and geranium! And me without the shadow of a sense of smell! What to do, since I do not permit myself to skip a topic? (And in the unlikely event that anyone is trying to collect *all* of these, the last few have been posted in Critical Analysis.) Last time I picked up vanilla extract at FoodMart, I barely controlled my impulse to grab those spice bottles and start a sniffathon. I suppressed the impulse, so this posted here will have to be the "before" part of the poem, with the "after" portion waiting for future experience. \ LEAVES TO SNIFF ("before" version) Pennyroyal: the scent of vanished glories, an aristocratic past remembered in poverty. Dill: pickles, what else could it possibly be? Bergamot: the whiff of a stately middle-European town-mayor on a warm spring day (whatever *he* smells like, and I don't really want to know.) Sage: a wise odor -- one sniff of this increases wisdom. (For one thing, you gain knowledge of what sage smells like.) Geranium: the fragrance of an ancient mineral. Sometimes used in botanical power plants. And, for the record, a poem is what I *say* is a poem, so not a word on *that* subject! |

A poem is a poem is a poem. Now about this sniffing, I hope you don't accidently grab the bottle of glue at the food mart. That would be a very happy subject. But anyway, you have written about topics that would leave me with an empty page. I don't know how you do it! Liz |
