One of the features of the main site I enjoy most is reading why a poet wrote a poem, what inspired the poem. I wanted to share my inspiration for this poem with you as I thought it was a unique happening. I was looking up a word in the dictionary and came across this word: Epiphany:A sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of something. A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization: “I experienced an epiphany, a spiritual flash that would change the way I viewed myself” (Frank Maier). I loved the way it sounded. It rolled off my tongue. And the quote by Frank Maier struck a cord in me. I would love an epiphany! And what would happen if someone had one? How would their life be affected? This train of thought developed into something a little unusual. A two part story that I’ve posted in the Prose Forum. But it also begged to be said in poetic form. So here, is the poetic story of a child’s epiphany. If you are intrigued enough, please read the story (in two parts as it’s quite long) in the Prose Forum. I thank you in advance. She came into my young life When I had but a child’s care And when she left that summer day Part of her remained with me there. The years passed and I Remembered her sometime And now I want to introduce Her here, within my rhyme Her name was Epiphany Within her was God’s glow I met her only once you see But her heart was easy to know She traveled on foot from town to town Never staying long in one place Her clothes were worn and tattered As was her weathered face. An uncaring child I was then Thoughtless and unkind But one afternoon with Epiphany Changed my heart and changed my mind And now in my freedom I vowed to spread this tale To bring the world her story In this I shall not fail Love others as you would your own Treat everyone with respect Don’t judge on color or creed On this you must reflect If you walk a mile in the shoes Of another of God’s own Would you then belittle them For the seeds that they have sown? Life is not just about Money and superiority Life is about believing in Being someone’s epiphany |

Your last stanza is so so true . We all know the truth but it is rare that one of us lives it. I enjoyed your epiphany. Thanks for sharing. |

As soon as I thought I had some time There in the background the dinner chime Your poem so sweet and of importance it is Deserves a better reply than this Very nice poem Sharon, I'm inspired by the last stanze too The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools. |

Stepping outside of our own insular world to see through the eyes of another - is surely one of the most difficult tasks we could endeavor.... This is a wonderful reminder, PdV... I'll be off to Prose now.. ![]() |

PdV, I received the prose in my email and was moved beyond comprehension and the poem is beautiful. I too love the last stanza and highly recommend everyone to read the prose as well. Very well written (both pieces) and very thought provoking. Poetry~ Words falling on paper, painting a dream. Shawna R. Holder Boise, Idaho |

PDV: I logged on this morning to find the prose in my email... and it's incredible.... don't apologize for it being long when every word is a gem! ![]() I'd intended to send you an email, but being the addict I am ![]() The briefest of encounters may profoundly effect our lives... I don't think any of us will forget Epiphany or Carrie... Well done! And WhtDove: Thank you for making sure I didn't miss these treasures!! *S* |

Wonderful poem, i'll definitly find the prose story and read that. What a great way to choose a topic for a poem. Inspiration from the dictionary, beautiful. I'll have to try that. [This message has been edited by dash rendor (edited 02-19-2000).] |
