A friend of younger years
often taken for granted,
gowing up, growing apart
growing away.

A friend, there before the
sometimes painful truth of time
rears it's sudden head
in the form of adutlhood.

A friend, where joy is simple
tears are very few;
a bridge between innocence and life,
a safe link to yesterday.

A friend, now lost, and why?
Because I would not bring her
through the darkened maze
of my emerging self.

A friend, I did not trust
because simplicity melted away.
I shut her out, afraid of loss
preteneding it was okay.

A friend, and so I went on alone.
I was okay, despite the darkness.
But sometimes now,
with thoughts of simplicity
I miss the friend I lost...

Grant that I may not judge my niegbor until I have walked a mile in his moccasians

Oh this brought back memories for me of losing my best freind at school, we were both 16 and her father was in the airforce and was posted away, we kept in touch for a couple of years then she was posted again and I lost touch.
Finally after many years when we were in our late 20's a mutual friend of mine and her mothers told her where i lived and my Ph No, she rang we chatted like the old days and I wrote and never heard back, I just assumed she didn't want to keep in touch but I guess i'll never know unless I try to reach her again.
Thanks for the memory, maybe I might call

what a treat to start my day with...seems like its been awhile without your words(smile)this is excellent...and I related to it well...those two verses above are perfect!!and what I like most is I read this with two different interpretations...
you could be speaking of an old friend of the past, or you could be refering to yourself...the person you use to be...
only the poet really knows...right? (smile)
great poem C, and Im delighted to see theres another one...Im on my way
