A whisper so soft, as if was not spoken,
Night's gentle breeze, the quiet unbroken,
Oaken cathedrals, worship the moon,
As silence is broken, by call of the loon,
A melody haunting, sad magic she weaves,
Through still of the forest, through shimmering leaves,
Seeks out the answers, eternity's call,
No answer forthcoming, no answer at all,
Echoes the loon, over forest and glen,
Night's benediction, sings forth from the fen,
Doe stops to listen, beside stands her fawn,
Awaiting the answer, awaiting new dawn.

nice images.

you could very easily expand on that motif to make a mini-epic or something a la Christabel....

Oh my, this is beautiful...it would make a lovely sonnet...perhaps something like this:

Of God And Nature

A whisper soft, as if it were not spoke,
Night's gentle breeze, the quiet now unbroke,
Oaken cathedrals, worship the pale moon,
As silence broke, by calling of the loon,
A haunting melody , so sad, she weaves,
Through still of forest and through shim’ring leaves,
Seeks out the answers, hears no echoed call,
No answer coming, no answer now at all,
Echoes the loon, o’er forest and o’er glen,
Night's benediction, sings forth from the fen,
Doe stops to listen, there too stands her fawn,
Awaiting answer, awaiting the new dawn.

And as a hush falls o’re the stilling mist
Of God, the best of nature, does enlist

Mike~
I 'listened' with my eyes
and heard with my heart,
the calling of the loon.
Wonderful image.
I just love this one.

Your poem croons as a loon, my friend...

The secrets of remote lagoon
From morning's blush of dawn,
Till rise of eve's nocturnal moon
Are in its eerie song.

Such wonderment from wint'ry surd,
Soliloquy's mere tune.
Grand jubilance in summer's heard -
Uncommon sounds the loon.

Bespeckled pinions, grace in flight,
Resplendent is her plume.
Bemusing splash to see her light
And then cavort the flume.

Her serenade's a proud regale
A songbird so unique
How wondrous her falsetto wail
Reechoing mystique

I'll not divulge the secret song
Of this remote lagoon
I'll rather hearken years along
The laughter of the loon.

The thing I like about your work, is that it reads so *smooth*...Your meter and rhyme - it's as if one line spills over into the next at times.  Fabulous piece sir.  This one was *crisp* with imagery.

Mike, this is awesome...I want to hear a loon, I don't think I ever have, except in this poem.

Thank you for the beautiful poetic responses and the very gracious comments.  I must admit I have never heard a loon either, and there are not too many forests in Kansas.  Have to go by what I imagine.  Again, thank you all so much for the comments.

Mike,
To write of a loon
without knowing the tune
just makes me swoon.

(sorry, it rhymed)

You caught me in a magical spell, and carried me back to a place of my teenhood in the far north of British Columbia, within sight of Alaskan snow-encrusted mountains, on an insufferable, incredible summer day that was 130 degrees in the sun.  My cousins and I swam in a silent ice-cold lake surrounded by deep mountain forest, and then, for the first time, I heard the loons calling.

What an unforgettable sound that was, echoing across the shockingly frigid water that gave such relief.  I will never forget it.  What a gift you have given me today, my friend!

I've never been back there, and though it's been some thirty years, I'll never forget the enchantment of their strange and haunting calls.

Gave me a chuckle there Martie...
now I have been called a loon a time or two... hehe
Rosemary, what a lovely response.  Gave me a nice feeling to know I was able to take you back to such a pleasant memory.

That was a very beautiful poem.  I've always loved the loon.

that we recognize our oneness,
even as the single droplet of water
knows also that it is the sea."Daniel

Mike~
You made me curious with this poem on Loons.
I found the neatest web page with
sounds and amazing pictures of the
Loon.
Thought you might enjoy it ... I did.
Thank you for opening up a new area
of nature's creatures to me.
