I found the fellow lying in an alley- By a gin mill down on Tate and Thirty-first. A place I wouldn’t normally have stopped at.. But I had a sudden urge to quench my thirst. Just as I passed the entrance to the alley... I heard a moan from somewhere in the black- And cautiously I stepped into the shadows, And found a fellow lying on his back. I had no way of knowing where he’d come from- Nor just how long that he’d been lying there. I found he had two bullets in his body- And blood was on his face and in his hair. He said, “Mister could you do me one small favor? Could you call my wife? she worries when I’m gone. Tell her that I didn’t up and leave her- That I love her, and I won’t be coming home”. He said, “I come from out near Caldwell, Kansas- Farm and ranch is all I’ve ever known. I came here to Chicago on some business- I had no business being here alone. I think they must have seen my roll of money- I just stopped by this place to have a beer. I guess I’m what you’d call a country bumpkin. And unprepared to deal with people here. I stepped outside to catch myself a Taxi- Two fellows jumped me then one pulled a gun. They shot me, then they dragged me in the alley.. The took my wallet, watch, and then they run. My number’s here, and please don’t fail to call her- She’ll set up things to put me in the ground. And, by the way, please tell my teenaged children- That country folks should never come to town”. GS: That's a pretty harsh piece of work... hope it ain't true, but I got a feeling it is. Well done... it made me think and feel which is the highest complement I can offer. I bow to you and yours. |
