My mother dressed me in vests For school age photographs. She owned me. My brother whipped my back With a shining heavy doghouse chain. He owned me. My first friend cried When I smashed his prize Coke bottle. He owned me. My teachers asked me what's it like To be so tall, so different. They owned me. My father wouldn't hear Of snapped pencils taking the place of work. He owned me. My cousin threw throwing knives Into my onecoatslackpainted wall. He owned me. My books opened to worlds So fanciful and distant it was all fake. They owned me. My god opened my eyes To worlds so distant I were it were fake. He owned me. My girlfriend let me taste Several flavors of fluttery lip gloss presses. She owned me. My home state drove me out To a place I now call home and mean it. It owns me. My poetry shapes my insides For you to be inspired to find different paths. You own me. |

Mike...Nobody owns us unless we allow them. This poem was very well crafted although it makes me a bit sad in its nature |

Your poem makes me think of a line in an old Janis Joplin song..."Freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose." People can only take so much from you..before theres nothing left to give.I have felt owned many times in my life...but I bought myself back..and you can to.Your poem really makes you think..nicely done. |

this is a very cool poem Bsq...very deep and thought provoking and obviously personal, yet I could read so much of my own lifes "ghosts" in to it..powerful piece, unique as well, as you always are. take care, jm Do you live by the book, do you play by the rules Do you care what is thought by others about you If this day is all that is promised to you Do you live for the present, the future the past... tracy chapman |

Yes, it is a choice, isn't it? And in this particular case, it's my pleasure... |

JM, Thanks for reading, and understanding. My attempt at taking personal moments and throwing some universality into them. serenity, Then let it be so. Or something. Mike |

Wow.....magnificent!! The words of being owned by all and belonging to none...I relate and offer *angel wing hugs* for they ask nothing in return. |
