                 The Seagull

          A seagull glided silently
          Through skies of misty blue.
          The sunlight kissed his wingtips,
          As across the heav'ns he flew.
          A gentle breeze caressed his brow,
          And bore him on its back.
          He wheeled and circled gracefully,
          Around his lofty track.
          Past valleys, green, he winged his way,
          And o'er the mountain's height.
          A patch of white, against the blue,
          He soared in solo flight.

          The world around him was serene;
          And, yet, his restless soul
          Sought, ever, for a greater peace,
          Throughout the azure bowl.
          He saw the beauties of the skies,
          And, of the earth, below.
          And, still, his eyes were searching,
          Though, for what, he did not know.
          As he skimmed the wide horizon,
          His heart, within him, sighed.
          It whispered, "Life is better, still,
          Beyond the blue divide."

          It told him of a brighter realm,
          Beyond a distant shore;
          Where he, at last, would find true joy,
          And never want for more.
          A place where gentle summertime
          Remains throughout the year;
          A world of endless sunshine,
          And skies, forever clear.
          Now, faster, beat his supple wings;
          Above the world he climbed,
          Searching for the passageway
          Into this land, sublime.

          His spirit leapt within him, now,
          For, up ahead, he saw
          A sight that took his breath away,
          And filled his soul with awe:
          A lovely lady seagull,
          Most wondrous and fair;
          She flew directly to his side,
          And hovered, softly, there.
          An angel, though in seagull form,
          How like the sun she shone!
          Their wingtips touched - his joyful heart
          Embraced her as its own.

          They wheeled and turned, with earth below,
          And Heaven's light above.
          They joined, as one, in harmony,
          And sanctified their love.
          Now, unified, the duo flew
          Toward their lofty goal,
          Where golden sunbeams warm the heart,
          And soothe the restless soul.
          Together, now, they quickly found
          The path he'd missed, before;
          Then, in that blessed land, they dwelt
          In love, forevermore.
