Same Time, Next Life

The days are short, the hours are few
I’ve not much time for loving you
We met upon the sunset hour
And witnessed love begin to flower

The body has grown ill and weak
The mind too fragile dreams to seek
But hearts are beating ecstacy
In rhythms of the pounding sea

Love has come to us too late
A lover’s loss, a wicked fate
But time will bury all the strife
I’ll meet you here same time, next life

Just stand upon the ocean pier
The lovliest evening of the year
Against the red of sunset sky
A soul that loved but did not die

Your face will not appear the same
And I won’t even know your name
But this I swear to be the true
Within my heart I’ll know it’s you

We’ll be as one, as man and wife
Just meet me here same time, next life

Elizabeth Santos

Lizzie~
This is one of the most beautiful things
I've seen you do.
What a wonderful gesture for a friend.

Your heart overflows with loving thoughts.
I can't begin to let you know how this touched me.
Perhaps there is a 'pier' in all our lives,
where we stand waiting for that recognition
to dawn.
Love you

Denise,
Thank you for the WOW.

vandana, Thanks for all the exclamation marks. Glad you liked it

Martie,
I wrote this for the friend of a very dear friend, but I'm glad it also touched you.

Marge,
You put more exuberance and love into your responses than most put into their poetry.
You are a dear, and I'm glad you liked this
Thank you

Elizabeth,
This was very good, especially the last two lines. I love repeating lines when they are integral to the theme of a piece of work.

"A soul that loved but did not die"

This line touched me so acutely, Liz. The poem is beautiful. Would that we could each hold this sentiment in our heart. Thank you for sharing this here.

couldn't keep the chills from overtaking me... this poem touched me deeply. it's an amazing thing when souls connect so profoundly that it can't be contained in one lifetime, and you have expressed that so beautifully, that even though it was written for your friend, i feel the need to thank you.

Hoot, This happens more than we realize. Thanks

Terry, It is I who thank you for reading and commenting on mine. You're very kind

Destiny, It's probably the notion of this poem that so many are relating to. The idea that love continues on no matter what, the idea of a spiritual recognition between two people, whether you believe in reincarnation or life after death in heaven. There is a permanence to some relationships, which some couples are aware of. Some people meet late in life and have a short time together but have the promise of a continuation of that love into the future. If you were touched by this poem, then you can call it yours.
Thanks for your comments.

Elizabeth,
truly you have told us all of the power of love to stretch beyond the boundaries of space and time. . . told us of a love so deep and so true that it could not be contained by something so simple as death.

I have to agree with Destiny when she said, "it's an amazing thing when souls connect so profoundly that it can't be contained in one lifetime," I think that this is the kind of love that we all wish to have in this life, and in the next. . .

Perhaps I have said too much, but as someone who believes in the power of love, I cannot say enough about this work. . .thank you my friend. . .

Thank you for your wonderful comments. It is truly rare and wonderful if two people experience this kind of love, no matter the age or circumstances. I will be sure to tell my friend of your remarks. They were much appreciated. Thank you
Liz

Martie, thanks for your comments. This shows how many people contemplate a subject that is never spoken of. And I agree with Sven, that love is a rare gift.
