SONG OF SILENCE

The passion of my heart runs deep
As wings of love ascend.
But silence will sing in due course,
To where it may extend.
For life is folly, time a foreboding,
Every dream must end.

I reach out with withered, wretched hands,
Frail and truly scarred.
To touch the amble forms of youth,
From which I have been barred.
Feeble and failing, weak and ailing,
Ambition, itself, comes marred.

As the autumn wind grows chilly,
The days grow short, the cold nights long.
I miss the humming of the fireflies,
And the nightingale's song.
The song, itself, diminishing
From a soul ever in wrong.

Over my shoulder I see a shadow,
A cloaked figure drawing near.
Walking slightly faster than me,
A scythe held high in hand, I fear.
Proof from the lords of agony,
The damned of earth stand beyond, drear.

But I close my eyes, no remorse or shame
For the pathway I have chose.
Nor for actions or words that may have come
Purely from emotion arose.
For emotion holds the only truth to me,
This dark world ever did expose.

Speak not my name beyond this day,
Long have I awaited its arrive.
Remember if you must, I stood for hope,
Even with none left to derive.
Yet even as hope went awry,
Remember even still I tried,
To be the best man I could be,
The one who this day, died.

Michael Anderson

For all behind was dark and drear,
And all before was night and fear.
How many hours of night or day
In those suspended pangs I lay,
I could not tell; I scarcely knew
If this were human breath I drew.

Lord Byron

Micheal,
Your poem is excellent, even with a sad case of the blues. But remember the only thing that never changes is change itself. So there is hope.

Dreams are but wishes of sleep,
Hope is a promise your heart must keep.
Tis true innocence of youth can be stolen away,
But ever the love born in the child will stay.
For other's lies ... feel no shame...
take not one moment of anothers blame.
Hope and all loves emotions still speak your name...
this child, this poet, this man...one in the same.

exceptional poem M,...once again your words touch me,
take care, jm

Michael, the expertise with which you write, naturally, no longer surprises me.   However, within your poetry I often find a sense of surprise at my reactions. This one is no different. I find the line ~

"For emotion holds the only truth to me,
This dark world ever did expose."

particularly striking tonight, as I've been struggling with how to say (write) something similar to that. This is superb writing, perfection in form and feeling.

This is sad, Michael. Listen to Seymour. His words contain wisdom. Very well written.

This is an excellent poem. I love the emotion you write with and especally these two parts:

"For life is folly, time a foreboding,
Every dream must end."

"But I close my eyes, no remorse or shame
For the pathway I have chose.
Nor for actions or words that may have come
Purely from emotion arose.
For emotion holds the only truth to me,
This dark world ever did expose."

It's really wonderful, keep up the good work!

To touch the amble forms of youth,
From which I have been barred

These lines are strong enough to justify the entire poem.....but there are many more. Excellent writing, MIchael.

You write with strength, my friend...a man strong enough to hone such powerful emotions and mold them into this kind of poem.  Excellent work, as always.

Michael,

said this before, I'll say it again, you are one complex person!

Beautiful, sorrowful work.  The second stanza is a terrific masterpiece.  This poem tugs at my heart.

Although I did find sadness in this poem i also found hope
Remember if you must, I stood for hope,
Even with none left to derive.
I think that this last part spoke to me of the feeling someone had that even though their life was ending...that they had lived it well

Hmmm...  I should explain to everyone that this poem was written for my father who passed away from cancer in 1993.  This was actually written in 1993 as he was dying, with the exceptions of a little editing.  I have just been missing him horribly this year.  I think I'm just trying to catch some of the hope he always seemed to have no matter how bleak his situation was.

Sy, always, there is hope.

Janet, thank you for the poetic reply.

Claire, I'm glad I could keep the surprises coming - I am sorry you relate to that one particular line so well, though.  I hope all gets better for you soon.

denise, thanks - and I will listen to Sy's wisdom.

Justin UFF - I know...   That better?

devina, You have been a constant smile for me, I can't thank you enough for that, hun.  I know this is a pain you carry too, likewise, I will always try to be a smile for you during yours.

serenity, you certainly don't - but I'm glad you did.

Balladeer, I'm glad you liked those lines, they stand strongest in my eyes also.

Satiate, I'll just say ditto to that when it comes to your work my friend.

Corinne, glad you see some shine in the complexity.

Rosemary, Quite a compliment, my sincerest thanks.

Tess, Indeed, you read the ending well.

Thank you all for the kind replies.

M, just saw your footnote, seems like this one was in ways, misread...we assumed it was the poet speaking his view...I "read between the lines" with that thought...so I guess my poetic reply did not apply(sorry)...but never less your words always evoke emotion and inspiration is us all..even if we read our own emotions into it...
my point here -(smile)...is to say once I had your footnote on its true intention...after reading it again...it made it even more powerful knowing it was you putting yourself in his place and speaking his heart....
very emotional tribute...
still in awe,
take care jm

Ahh, finally another one of those dark pieces I love so much. This is superb, as are most of the others. Change is inevitable, but rarely comfortable   Strength will come to make it through, no matter how hard it is to see that.
