Old City of the South

The Ashley and the Cooper, two rivers in the south
Gently cradle an old and lovely city at their mouth
A city known as Charleston, both welcoming and warm
Known for stately grandeur and old hisoric charm

Stories of the past at every doorstep to be told
A magnolia to symbolize the beauty to behold
A long remembered walk through quaint old city streets
A favorite little restaurant where evrybody meets

A place that takes you back to an era more serene
But lovelier than any place imagined in your dream
Old brick walks and wrought iron gates entice you to come in
And wonder back to view the hidden garden found within

Cherished relics of the past are proudly on display
Respected and revered for the history they portray
There is no other city with more aesthetic worth
Or a sense of heritage as Charlestonians by birth

Have you ever seen the Ashley with moonlight dancing on its crests?
Or stood on Isle of Palms to watch the sun set in the west?
Have you ever heard stories handed down by word of mouth
Always spun into captivating tales of the Old South?

A devastating hurricane could not destroy the pride
Or the spirit of a city with the Ashley by its side
The architecture, character and charm remain in tact
Charleston is beckoning for me to venture back

You portrayed wonderful thoughts here, I felt I was there even though I've never been there. I love the way your poems flow with such grace, makes me feel I'm floating peacefully on a boat in a calm sea.

Thank you lost dreamer and Mike. I know you have both been reading my poems.

I would like to apologize to everyone for not keeping up with reading everybody's poetry, but I am unable to keep up right now. I am not even writing, but have posted some old poems which were written last year. I look at all the titles of poems being posted and long to read them. Please don't think I'm not interested. I'm just trying to deal with what's going on in my family right now

ALSO.. Denise is unable to read and reply due to computer problems. Our "Guardian Angel" is temporarily out of commision. Thanks for your understanding

Elizabeth, my friend-
This lady of the South appreciates
the beauty of your poem.
The streets of Charleston beckon
me to visit often.
I've stood on the bank of the river
and seen the magnolia in bloom, its
fragrance sweetening the night.
Lovely, just lovely thoughts.

Hugs to DENISE

I chanced to visit N'Awlins this Christmas and while it is not Charleston, the South has a way of enticing you to come back and visit...often.  Indeed, this place will be on my list of places to enjoy.

Sunshine, I don't know where you dug this up, but thank you for bringing it back, for there were responses that I hadn't seen. Sometimes these poems slip away so fast, you can't keep up. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. The city is more beautiful than any poem could describe
